Note: “Teacup” Maltese is a term used by disreputable breeders and is applied to any abnormally small Maltese. Usually a teacup is any dog weighing less than 4 lbs when fully grown. There are many health issues associated with teacup dogs. While tiny dogs are very cute, breeding for “Teacup” is a controversial practice that is not encouraged by responsible breeders.
Temperament: The Maltese is a very sweet, loveable, charming little breed, and is prized as the perfect lap dog. They are very good natured and friendly, always seeking attention. Their willingness to please their owner makes them easily trained, and as long as they are socialized well as a growing puppy, they are good with children and other dogs. Maltese are very intelligent and able to learn tricks and commands easily. Very trusting of and loyal to their owners, they develop a deep bond with them, and while friendly with strangers, they are quick to alert their master when something is wrong. They make a wonderful house pet, and are also among the top three breeds for people who suffer from allergies.

Coat: Long, Straight and Silky
Activity: Maltese puppies for sale in PA are a very relaxed breed, so they are great for apartment living and being a lap dog. However, if outdoor playtime is available, they will enjoy it. This breed is sensitive to extreme cold.
Grooming: If kept long, daily brushing is needed but for shorter coats, regular clippings every 4-6 weeks is recommended. Keep nails trimmed short, and also make sure ears are clean and free of hair.
Shedding: The Maltese is essentially non-shedding so they are great for people with allergies.
Life Expectancy: 12-15 years
Origin: The oldest record of this breed was found on a Greek amphora found in the Etruscan town of Vulci. The first written documentation of this breed was in 350 BC and they are thought to have been named on the island of Malta or possibly the Sicilian town of Melita. The Maltese is thought to have descended from a Spitz type dog, and was owned by royalty all over the world. In times past, women carried the Maltese around in their sleeves and also slept with them in their beds at night. These sweet little dogs are often called the Maltese lion dog. They were first recognized by the AKC in 1888.
